Tuesday 14 July

I can’t believe it. When I went to bed last night, I know I left the lawnmower man’s $100 on the kitchen table, two $50 notes, but when I got up this morning it was missing. Agnes didn’t come up for breakfast this morning, which is unusual, and I couldn’t stop thinking about it all day. Looks like the lawnmower man will have to get $150 next time.

Anyway, when I got home tonight Agnes was downstairs, so I asked her to come up, and I said does she know anything about the money. She went really red, and said no she didn’t. I said, well I left it on the table last night and it isn’t there now, and there’s only her and me in the house. I said if she had it and gave it back, I would say no more about it and we could pretend it never happened. Agnes went from red to white. I thought she was going to faint. She turned and went downstairs. I thought she may have been going to get the money, but she didn’t come up again. What a shame, after that intimate talk we had last night, and me thinking I might be able to get her a job. I wonder if she gambles.
