Monday 17 August

Agnes and I had a session with Susan today, but it was a bit awkward, as I kept saying what, what, and I think the other two were getting sick of me.

Susan was on about, apart from other things, magnanimity, which she feels women especially have trouble with, as they have been brainwashed into thinking they have to constantly be on their guard so as not to be taken advantage of. Her opinion is that a lack of magnanimity doesn’t mean you are liberated. Quite the opposite. She says we’re to be happy for other people’s successes, and it’s counter to our interests to be mean-spirited. All the good ideas don’t have to be seen to be ours. It’s more important to recognise good ideas and give credit, and then to make sure the good ideas are acted on, or at least not forgotten.  We should be confident enough in our position, in our place in the world, that we can choose to humbly serve others at times, even men. This isn’t being a doormat. It’s doing it because we choose to. It’s being generous-spirited. We’re to allow others their moment in the sun. Agnes seemed to like the idea. I think she’s quite like that anyway.
