Tonight, I was sitting on the couch, alone, pretending to watch TV, but really listening to the rain pattering against the windows and wondering where Agnes was, when something caught my eye. It was two $50 notes stuck down the back of the cushions. That’s right, I was going to put them on the kitchen table.
So, no choice, I grabbed my keys, jumped into my car, backed out at about sixty kilometres an hour, just missing the letterbox, and headed for the beach park.
I wandered along the front, looking for her in her old spots, getting soaked and freezing but not caring. At last, I spotted her asleep on a bench under a shelter. I was so nervous approaching her, but I plucked up the courage and woke her up, told her what had happened, and begged and pleaded with her to come back. At first, she said she’d prefer to stay where she was, this is why she lives like this, but she’d be happy to have her $100 back. I pleaded and pleaded until finally, thankfully, she relented. She then packed her few belongings into her baskets with great dignity and got into my car. We went home without speaking. When we arrived home, she went downstairs to her room, closing the door behind her. However, how am I ever going to make this up to her? Before going to bed, I put her key and $100 back on the kitchen table. I hope she accepts them both.
