I had a session with Susan today. I felt it was a bit dismissive. She was talking about moving up the metaphorical ladder. I mean, how else are you going to get on top of that glass ceiling (apart from an escalator, a lift, a trampoline, sleeping with the (male or female) boss…)?

Her thoughts were that she gets that not everyone wants to do this. However, if I do have my sights set at a higher level than that at which I am currently operating, I shouldn’t pass up opportunities for promotion or extra responsibilities because I’m intimidated by the prospect, or worried about the extra work. OK, pass them up because I don’t want that job or the extra money, but not because it means changing, learning something new, appearing not fully competent for a while, or because I fear being criticised or making a mistake (the biggest road block of them all).

Trouble is, I want a promotion without having to do any of those things.
