I almost knocked a cyclist off his bike this morning while chatting to Agnes and driving down the West Coast Highway. Why do they ride on the road when they’re riding parallel to a perfectly good cycle path that’s been provided for cyclists, after lobbying by cyclists? Am I supposed to care about their safety more than they do? I think it inconveniences them occasionally when they have to go around pedestrians. Well, guess what, the roads haven’t been designed as a sporting venue for Lycra-clad cyclists no matter how convenient it is for them. Why is it even legal for them to ride on the road next to a cycle path? The cars can’t drive on the cycle path. The pedestrians can’t walk on the road. And then they swerve out in front of you — no signal for ten metres followed by changing lanes only if it’s safe — and shake their fists at you if you happen to be closer to them than a metre. I’m thinking of setting up a cricket pitch on the road, as it would be quite convenient for me, and shake my fist at any car that gets within a metre of me. Also, when you’re parked at lights, they whizz up on the inside of you, well within a metre. Is that legal?
