Monday 27 July

So, today was the big day — Agnes’ first day! We were a bit late, as she took ages in the bathroom this morning. I hadn’t anticipated how difficult it was going to be with the two of us having to get up and out at the same time. I think we’re going to need some rules.

At work I introduced her to everyone, and everyone was suitably polite and welcoming. In fact, a couple of the blokes were more welcoming than what I thought was necessary. Then I found her a desk in the common area, and we spent much of the morning sorting out her security badge, login (logon?), and how to navigate our computer system. I think she enjoyed morning tea. After morning tea Ronald took over for a while, and spent about two hours extolling the virtues of our quality system. Despite that, she hadn’t quit by lunchtime, so we had lunch together. Then I had to find things for her to do, hadn’t really thought about that, so that took up the rest of her day. At about three o’clock I told her she could go home if she liked, and we’d start her full days on Wednesday.

What with one thing and another, I only had a couple of hours to get on with my own work. I didn’t realise how long it takes to look after someone who’s helping you. I headed home at about six o’clock and then, when I got in, I had to make my own dinner, as Agnes had been too knackered to do anything. She was flat out on the couch.

Anyway, she said she’d had a good day. I’ll have to put a bit more effort into making sure I organise more to keep her entertained on Wednesday.
